Schools & family life

Great schools, small class sizes, and a community that shows up for kids.

One of the first things Bay Area families ask me is: "What are the schools like?" The answer is: really good. The Foothills has a mix of traditional public schools, charter schools, and some genuinely unique educational options you won't find in bigger cities.

Outdoor lifestyle & recreation

Your backyard just got a serious upgrade.

This is the thing that surprises Bay Area transplants the most. You don't have to drive two hours to get into nature — it's literally outside your front door. Auburn State Recreation Area alone has over 40 miles of trails. The American River runs through it. Lake Clementine is a short hike down. And Tahoe is 90 minutes away on a good day.

Auburn State Recreation Area

42+ miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The North and Middle Fork canyons are world-class.

American River & Lake Clementine

Kayaking, swimming, fishing, and gold panning. Summer weekends here feel like a destination vacation — minus the traffic.

Sierra Foothills wine trails

Over 100 family-owned wineries within a short drive. Less crowded than Napa, friendlier prices, and the winemakers actually talk to you.

Restaurants & dining

Yes, the food scene is actually good.

This is the question I get from Bay Area folks all the time — "but what do you do for food?" Here's the honest answer: it's not the Bay Area, and it's not trying to be. What you'll find is a solid lineup of really good local restaurants — the kind of places where the owners are usually in the kitchen, the menus change with the seasons, and you actually become a regular. Farm-to-table means something different when the farms are literally down the road.

Auburn Farmers Market

Saturday mornings done right. Local farms, fresh food, live music, and that small-town community feel you don’t get in bigger cities.

Downtown Auburn

A mix of Old Town and Downtown Auburn with local restaurants, coffee shops, and wine bars. Historic charm, walkability, and plenty of spots where you’ll quickly become a regular.

Auburn Ale House

A local institution. Great craft beer, community events every week, and a patio that fills up fast on warm evenings.

Wine country & arts

Culture didn't stop at the Bay Bridge.

One of the biggest fears Bay Area buyers have is losing access to arts and culture. The Sierra Foothills has a thriving creative community — galleries, live music, film festivals, and one of the most beautiful arts scenes in rural California. Nevada City in particular draws artists, musicians, and writers from across the state.

First Friday Artwalk — Nevada City

Every first Friday, downtown Nevada City comes alive with local artists in boutiques, wine rooms, and galleries. A genuine community tradition.

Sierra Foothills wine region

An AVA that serious wine people are paying attention to. Zinfandel and Barbera thrive here. The tasting rooms are intimate and unpretentious.

Nevada County Concert Band

Free outdoor concerts — bring a lawn chair, a picnic, and your dog. Family-friendly and completely free. This is Foothills life in a nutshell.
